Most Ontario Injuries Happen Away From Work
If you’re self-employed or work in a blue-collar trade in Ontario, you already know your income depends on staying healthy. Whether you’re in construction, transport, delivery, or skilled trades, one injury or illness can stop your work and your pay.
What many people don’t realize is that most injuries in Canada don’t happen at work. They happen away from the job, when WSIB or employer coverage doesn’t apply.
On-the-Job Injuries in Ontario
According to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), more than 65,000 workers in Ontario had injuries that caused them to miss time on the job in 2022. While that number sounds high, workplace injury rates in Ontario have been dropping for years because of better safety rules, training, and awareness.
That’s good news but it also means your biggest risk might not be at work anymore.
Canadians Are Three Times More Likely to Get Hurt Away from Work
Studies from the Institute for Work & Health (IWH) found that non-work injuries like slips, falls, or sports accidents are far more common than workplace injuries.
In one large Ontario study, researchers looked at over 6.7 million injury-related hospital visits by working-age adults. Only about 1 in 10 injuries happened on the job. The rest almost 9 out of 10 happened away from work.
That means Canadians are at least three times more likely to be injured off the job than at work. And for self-employed people, those injuries can cause serious financial problems.
Why It Matters for Self-Employed and Blue-Collar Workers
If you work for yourself, you probably don’t have sick days or disability benefits. WSIB and EI coverage is optional for many independent contractors, and it usually only covers workplace injuries, not accidents or sickness that happen at home or on the weekend.
That’s where Accident and Sickness Insurance makes a difference. It can pay you a monthly income benefit if you’re hurt or sick and can’t work, no matter where the injury happens.
The best accident and sickness plans in Ontario provide 24/7 protection in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. They cover you whether you’re working, travelling, or spending time with family.
Protect Your Income - On and Off the Job
Most workers focus on safety while they’re on the clock. But since most injuries happen off the job, it makes sense to have protection that follows you everywhere.
Accident and sickness insurance helps self-employed Canadians and blue-collar workers keep their income steady, protect their family, and stay financially secure during recovery.
